Title: Ibadan Twins
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Artist / Gallery Statement
Ibadan Twins is a celebration of identity, ancestry, and the sacred bond of duality deeply rooted in Yoruba culture of Western Nigeria. In this oil on canvas, I explore the spiritual and cultural significance of twins — known as Ìbejì — who are revered within the traditions of Ibadan and the broader Yoruba community.
The two figures lean gently into one another, their foreheads almost touching, symbolizing unity, protection, and shared destiny. Their tribal facial markings are not merely aesthetic elements; they are historical imprints — visual signatures of lineage, belonging, and pride. These marks echo a time when identity was worn boldly on the skin, declaring heritage without apology.
The composition is constructed in segmented blocks of vibrant reds, ochres, olive greens, and deep earth tones. These fractured planes reflect the layered complexity of culture — past and present existing simultaneously. The warm palette evokes the heat of the Western Nigerian sun, the pulse of the marketplace, and the rhythm of talking drums carried on dusty air.
Geometric patterns, spirals, and symbolic markings weave through the background, referencing indigenous textiles, body art, and oral traditions. The twins’ elongated necks and stylized features speak to grace, dignity, and resilience. Their closed or lowered eyes suggest introspection — a quiet inner knowing — as if they are listening to ancestral whispers.
Gold accents flow vertically across the canvas, representing spiritual continuity and the unseen thread that binds generations. Though modern in abstraction, the work remains deeply anchored in tradition.
Ibadan Twins is not only about two individuals; it is about mirrored existence — self and shadow, past and present, earth and spirit. It invites viewers to reflect on connection: to culture, to memory, and to one another.
Through this piece, I honor the beauty of Yoruba identity and the enduring power of shared roots.
